My Story

I’m a farm girl from Minnesota. I grew up Irish-Catholic in my family’s 150-year-old farmhouse in Southeastern Minnesota. The first art I ever saw was in a church and my first experiences with wonder were in the wooded valley behind my house. When I was a child, my mother became very sick and I began regularly visiting hospitals with contemporary art collections. The same year she was diagnosed with cancer, the hospital unveiled a new Chihuly instillation designed to mimic clusters of cancer cells. I would spend the rest of my life becoming friends with those glass cancer cells. They introduced to me the idea that abstract art can help us make sense of nature and our place in it.

I spent my early creative career studying art, failing a lot, and generally bouncing around the Southern half of Minnesota. In 2016, I moved to the Bay Area to pursue a Masters degree and to escape the brutality of Midwestern winters. I hit the California-pavement running. I became active within the San Jose arts community, and between 2017 and 2018 I was a member of the Root Division Studio Artists program in San Francisco. In 2019, I had the life-changing honor of being awarded the San Jose Dublin Sister Cities Pat McMahon Post-Graduate Exchange Scholarship. I spent eight months studying public art as a Public Art Specialist and Digital Asset Librarian within the Dublin City Arts Office in Dublin, Ireland.

I have had the privilege of teaching university-level Fine Art studio courses since 2014 and my artwork has been exhibited throughout Minnesota and the California Bay Area. I currently live and make work from my charmingly-small studio apartment in San Francisco, California.
